KO Picks for CUFF 2015

Preview by Katrina Olson-Mottahed x CalgaryMovies.com

The Calgary Underground Film Festival kicks off on Monday April 13, 2015 in the Globe Cinema (617 8 Ave SW) at 7pm with the SXSW Official selection Ex Machina, the UK Sci-Fi film exploring what makes us human. This razor edged thriller is sure to keep the audience's nerves in check and brain busy for the entire running time. This film is going to blow the Calgary audience away, just as it has at each screening at every film festival it has been through. Ex Machina’s cinematographer Rob Hardy will be in attendance for a Q & A after the screening, as well as for the after party at Sole Korea Restaurant, located at 628 8 Ave SW (across the street from the Globe). Food, drinks and music by Audio Mass (Stilz & Flynn).

On Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7pm CUFF screens the Festival de Cannes 2014 Official selection The Salt of the Earth. The latest documentary is from German director Wim Wenders, himself a photographer and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, the son of photographer Sebastião Salgado. The Salt of the Earth is a tribute to Earth's beauty as explored through photography. The Salt of the Earth was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at both the 2015 Academy Awards and Independent Spirit Awards.

Saturday, April 18, 2015 is SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS!!!! Maybe the best family fun for all ages where you can show up in your pajamas for all you can eat sugary cereal galore and watch all the great vintage cartoons spanning the 60s through the 80s, all punctuated with cheesy commercials and PSAs!

CUFF is by far my favorite Calgary film festival and I suggest buying the $120 festival pass to enjoy the entire week of films. It is well worth it. For films, schedules, and to buy a festival pass visit www.calgaryundergroundfilm.org.
