A KO Review written by Emily Mody

A Walk In The Woods is about a writer named Bill Bryson (played by Robert Redford) who, after spending most of his life traveling the world, has to come to realize that he would like to face a challenge a little closer to home. Bryson decides to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends, Stephen Katz (played by Nick Nolte).

The first word that comes to mind when I think about this film is warm. I would describe A Walk In The Woods as an adventure film that is light-hearted and easy to watch. A Walk In The Woods was also very funny. It made me laugh out loud several times which is not something that often happens to me.

The comedy was interspersed with panoramic shots of the trail. These shots were so beautiful and they almost forced you to release a deep breath. Overall, the film was a story of a friendship that had been forgotten and about two men who wished to challenge themselves in a way that they hadn’t before.

A Walk in The Woods is directed by Ken Kwapis who is also known for directing License to Wed (2007), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), and Sexual Life (2005). A Walk in The Woods did remind me of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in the sense that the story centers around characters who are being taken out of their comfort zone and challenging themselves to do something new. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, however, has a much more dramatic tone and is also appropriate for a much younger audience.

A Walk In The Woods is rated 14A in Alberta because it includes strong language, brief nudity, and some crude humour. Overall, I really enjoyed A Walk In The Woods and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a funny adventure film.
